Bordeaux Begles Triumph Over Toulouse in Champions Cup Quarter-Final
Defending champions Bordeaux Begles have progressed to the semi-finals of the Investec Champions Cup after a hard-fought 30-15 victory over French rivals Toulouse in a thrilling quarter-final clash at Stade Chaban-Delmas. The win sets up a semi-final encounter with Bath, as Bordeaux continue their quest to retain the prestigious European title.
Early Exchanges and Key Moments
Toulouse, who were defeated by Bordeaux in last year's semi-final, started strongly, applying pressure from the outset. However, Bordeaux's resilient defence held firm, and they broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Maxime Lamothe powered over from a maul to score the opening try. Toulouse responded immediately from the restart, capitalising on a handling error by Yoram Moefana, with fly-half Romain Ntamack darting in on the right to level the score.
Controversial Red Card Alters Dynamics
The match took a dramatic turn late in the first half when Toulouse prop Dorian Aldegheri was shown a red card following a dangerous challenge on Damian Penaud. After a TMO review, referee Matt Carley deemed the head contact with Aldegheri's shoulder to be of high danger, resulting in a 20-minute red card and forcing Penaud to undergo a head injury assessment. Despite being a player down, Toulouse managed to take a 12-5 lead into halftime after a sweeping passing move sent winger Teddy Thomas racing clear down the right for a try.
Bordeaux's Second-Half Rally Secures Victory
After Thomas Ramos extended Toulouse's advantage with an early second-half penalty, Bordeaux mounted a comeback. Matthieu Jalibert collected his own kick and dived over for a try, narrowing the gap. Toulouse's challenges compounded when scrum-half Antoine Dupont received a yellow card for a trip in the 56th minute. Bordeaux seized control with Ben Tameifuna barging over for a try and Maxime Lucu adding a long-range penalty. Arthur Retiere sealed the win with a try in the corner, followed by another penalty from Lucu, ending any hopes of a late Toulouse comeback.
This victory underscores Bordeaux Begles' dominance in European rugby, as they now prepare for a semi-final showdown against Bath, aiming to defend their Champions Cup crown amidst intense competition.
