Australian jockey Josh Parr has been handed a 20-day suspension for excessive whip use during the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot, the harshest penalty of the meeting so far.
Parr's Royal Ascot Debut
Parr, a leading rider in Sydney, New South Wales, made his first-ever appearance in Britain at Royal Ascot. He traveled as the regular rider of Overpass, a ten-race winner with career earnings exceeding £6.7 million, and was the first runner for trainer Bjorn Baker.
Overpass, the 100-30 favorite for the 5-furlong race, finished third, one length behind winner Mission Central, ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O'Brien. The Australian sprinter ran prominently throughout and gave a good account of himself.
Whip Violation and Penalty
After the race, Ascot stewards referred Parr to the BHA Whip Review Committee for using his whip three times above the permitted limit of six from approximately one and a half furlongs out. The committee met on Friday and imposed a 20-day ban, doubled due to the Class 1 status of the race.
Parr will be suspended from Friday 3 July to Saturday 11 July 2026, and from Monday 13 July to Thursday 23 July 2026. He was also fined £1,250.
Other Jockeys Banned
Parr's penalty was the most severe from the first three days of Royal Ascot. Other riders suspended include:
- Wayne Lordan: 4 days (Coventry Stakes winner Greaet Barrier Reef)
- Joey Sheridan: 7 days (Ascot Stakes winner Kizlyar)
- Rossa Ryan: 3 days (Copper Horse Stakes winner Daiquiri Bay)
- Wesley Joyce: 5 days
- Juan Hernandez: 7 days (California jockey)
Despite the ban, connections have declared Overpass to run in the 6-furlong Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.
