The opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics has achieved a remarkable new attendance record, with organisers expressing immense pride in the successful execution of this complex dual-host event. Held at Milan's iconic San Siro stadium on Friday night, the ceremony sold more than 61,000 tickets, marking the highest attendance ever recorded for such an Olympic opening spectacle.
Record-Breaking Spectacle Across Northern Italy
Beyond the primary venue at San Siro, an additional 10,000 spectators watched the ceremony from various locations across northern Italy, where the Games' events are distributed between the two host regions. This widespread viewing reflects the unique geographical spread of these Winter Olympics, which presented significant logistical challenges for organisers.
Andrea Varnier, CEO of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, emphasised the achievement: "It was a major challenge and we were very, very proud of our accomplishment. I am extremely pleased that everything proceeded exceptionally well from an organisational perspective, which was particularly challenging in such a unique context."
Historic Olympic Firsts and Symbolic Moments
The ceremony featured several historic firsts for Olympic events. For the initial time in Olympic history, athletes paraded across four distinct locations, reflecting the distributed nature of these Games. Additionally, two Olympic cauldrons were simultaneously lit – one at Milan's Arco della Pace and another in Cortina d'Ampezzo's Piazza Dibona – symbolising the dual host regions and their partnership in hosting the Winter Olympics.
Maria Laura Iascone, ceremonies director for the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, articulated the ambitious vision behind the production: "Our objective was to captivate global audiences and better showcase our country through this spectacular presentation." The ambitious production involved thousands of participants, including 1,400 performers – with 1,200 volunteers among them – alongside numerous additional personnel deployed nationwide.
International Praise and Minor Critique
Despite the widespread success and positive reception, the International Olympic Committee noted one minor point of contention regarding the ceremony's three-and-a-half-hour duration. Christophe Dubi, the Olympic Games executive director, praised the overall impression while acknowledging the operational complexity: "The feeling I experienced at the ceremony? How elegant, how beautiful. The imagery, but also how profoundly Italian yet universally appealing that ceremony proved to be."
Dubi added regarding the length: "The only remark we received concerned the duration. It represents a fairly complex operation that will be thoroughly analysed for future improvements."
Star Performances and Creative Decisions
American pop superstar Mariah Carey served as the headline act for the opening ceremony, performing without compensation alongside other artists. Carey opened the show, which seamlessly blended elements representing both the host city and the mountainous regions of northern Italy. Ms Iascone commented on Carey's participation: "We were honoured that she chose to be with us for this historic occasion."
The ceremony also attracted some social media criticism regarding the prominence of Italian rapper Ghali's performance. Ghali, born in Milan to Tunisian parents, had previously generated controversy in Italy due to his criticism of Israel concerning its actions in Gaza. Mr Varnier addressed this criticism by explaining the creative decision: "The concept behind the television directing was to showcase the complete production rather than focusing on individual performers."
