Uruguay began their World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Cape Verde in their Group H opener at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Darwin Núñez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, followed by goals from Federico Valverde and Facundo Pellistri in the second half to seal the victory.
First Half Dominance
Uruguay controlled possession from the outset, creating several early chances. The breakthrough came when Núñez latched onto a through ball from Rodrigo Bentancur and slotted past Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Dias. Cape Verde struggled to mount any significant attacks, with Uruguay's defense, marshalled by José María Giménez, remaining solid.
Second Half Surge
Uruguay doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Valverde fired a powerful shot from outside the box that deflected off a Cape Verde defender and into the net. Pellistri added a third in the 74th minute, finishing a cross from Nahitan Nández. Cape Verde's best chance came in the 82nd minute when Ryan Mendes hit the post.
According to FIFA statistics, Uruguay had 65% possession and 12 shots on target to Cape Verde's 2. The win puts Uruguay top of Group H, with their next match against South Korea on June 26.
