Great Britain has been declared a nation "on the rise" in winter sports following a historic and record-breaking performance at the Winter Olympics in Italy. Chef de Mission Eve Muirhead made the triumphant announcement as British athletes received a hero's welcome upon their return to Gatwick Airport on Monday.

Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale topped the podium in the mixed team snowboard cross, while Weston partnered with Tabby Stoecker to secure the mixed skeleton title. The men's curling team, led by Bruce Mouat, added a silver medal on the penultimate day of competition, and freestyle skier Zoe Atkin completed the medal collection with bronze in the women's halfpipe on the final day.

"To come away as the most successful British team at the Winter Olympics, with the most-decorated male winter Olympian of all time in Matt Weston, it's really special," Muirhead told the Press Association. The former curling champion, who won gold at Beijing 2022 after bronze at Sochi 2014, emphasized the broader significance of the team's performance.
"We've had a handful of fourth places, and I think we've had 24 top 10 finishes as well," Muirhead noted. "This really shows that we are a nation with a lot of potential and most definitely on the rise in winter sports."

The returning Olympians were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd at Gatwick Airport's South Terminal. Friends, family members, and excited pupils from St. John's C of E Primary School in Caterham gathered to celebrate the athletes' achievements with a rousing homecoming reception.
"It was amazing to walk out there," Muirhead said of the emotional arrival. "This is their moment and they deserve every single bit of it because they really have been an incredible team out in Italy."
