Team GB's Winter Olympics Heroes Return with Record Gold Haul
Team GB's Winter Olympics stars received a rapturous heroes' welcome as they returned from Italy on Monday, following a hugely successful Games that saw them achieve a historic medal tally. The athletes landed at Gatwick Airport to cheering fans, British flags, and emotional reunions after a campaign that matched Britain's best-ever Winter Olympics performance.
Record-Breaking Medal Success
Great Britain secured five medals over the past two-and-a-half weeks in Italy, equalling their record performances from both 2014 and 2018. However, this year's Games marked a significant breakthrough in quality, with Team GB winning three gold medals—more than ever before in Winter Olympics history. Previously, Britain had never won more than one gold at a single Winter Games.
Skeleton star Matt Weston was the standout performer, claiming gold in both the men's individual skeleton and the mixed skeleton event alongside teammate Tabby Stoecker. Meanwhile, Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale made history by winning gold in the mixed team snowboard cross competition—the first British victory in an Olympic event on snow.
Additional medal success came from Zoe Atkin, who earned bronze in the women's ski halfpipe, and the men's curling team, who secured a silver medal to complete Team GB's impressive haul.
Emotional Homecoming at Gatwick Airport
Upon arrival at Gatwick Airport, the athletes were greeted by enthusiastic supporters waving British flags, with many young fans seeking autographs and photos. The medalists proudly wore their hard-earned awards around their necks, posing for both casual snapshots and professional photographs as part of their official homecoming celebration.
In one memorable moment, Weston posed alongside Nightingale and Bankes, showcasing their collective achievement. The atmosphere was one of pure jubilation, with loved ones embracing the returning Olympians after weeks of intense competition abroad.
Personal Celebrations and Wedding Plans
The homecoming also featured personal milestones, particularly for double gold medalist Matt Weston. His fiancée, Alex Howard-Jones, greeted him with an emotional kiss at the airport, revealing details about their upcoming wedding plans to BBC Sport.
'I mean it (the wedding) is as organised as it can be at the moment,' Howard-Jones explained. 'I need Matt's input now. I've sort of given him a bit of breathing space as the Olympics was coming, but now I'm like full steam ahead with it.'
She confirmed that she has already chosen her wedding dress, but Weston still needs to select his suit, joking that they were concerned he might gain more muscle during training. When asked about the wedding location, Howard-Jones hinted it would be abroad, though she ruled out Italy as a potential destination despite their recent Olympic success there.
Family Support and Emotional Triumph
During Weston's individual gold medal race, his father Tom was seen cheering enthusiastically, while Howard-Jones admitted to feeling nervous throughout the competition. However, she never doubted his ability to succeed.
'It feels amazing to be honest,' she said after his victory. 'I told you that he'd get a gold and he did. We couldn't be prouder.'
The celebrations extended to Weston's entire family, with his mother Alison sharing emotional hugs with Howard-Jones amid the jubilant scenes. Weston himself appeared momentarily shocked at the finish line before being embraced by his coach, marking the culmination of years of dedication and training.
This triumphant return not only celebrates individual achievements but also highlights Team GB's growing strength in winter sports, setting a new standard for future Olympic campaigns.
