British Olympic Curlers Launch Public Appeal for Snoop Dogg Selfie
Two prominent members of the British Olympic curling team have issued a heartfelt public plea to the iconic American rapper Snoop Dogg, urging him to release the selfie photograph he captured with them during the Winter Olympics in Italy. Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds, representing Team GB, found themselves in a surreal and starstruck moment when the global music superstar approached them for a picture at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.
A Surprising Encounter at the Winter Games
The unexpected meeting occurred on Friday as Mouat and Dodds were participating in the mixed doubles curling competition. Snoop Dogg, who holds the honorary position of coach for Team USA and serves as a special correspondent for broadcaster NBC, was present to witness the United States team secure a victory over Canada. Following their own triumphant match against Sweden, the British athletes were astonished when Snoop Dogg's team ushered them back for a photograph after they had initially walked past.
Jennifer Dodds recounted the memorable incident, stating: "We walked past and we were just kind of like 'there's Snoop Dogg', a bit starstruck, and then it was like 'cool jacket' because it had the US team on it. We continued walking past and we got ushered back. They said 'he wants a selfie with you' and we said 'OK!'. So, if Snoop Dogg's team is reading this, can we please get the photo? We would love to get the photo, we don't have it so we are on a mission to try to get it."
Starstruck Moments and Olympic Advocacy
Bruce Mouat expressed his amazement upon discovering that Snoop Dogg was already familiar with their curling achievements. "We went back, took the photo and he said 'I've heard about you' which is crazy. We wish we had taken a photo on our phone but I think we were just kind of a bit starstruck at that point," Mouat admitted. The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, has become a notable advocate for the Olympic movement, having carried the Olympic flame through the streets of Gallarate just days earlier and previously serving as a torchbearer in Paris.
Mouat praised Snoop Dogg's dedication to supporting a wide range of sports, emphasising: "I love that he has become such a fan of the Olympics. I knew that about him and I love that he has become a massive advocate for the Olympics, I think that's quite cool. He comes and supports every event, he doesn't just go to the major ones so we were quite honoured he came to curling." The British curler, who secured a silver medal at the 2022 Beijing Games with the men's team, added that seeing Snoop Dogg seated next to the mother of US curler Cory Thiesse during halftime made the encounter even more special.
Curling's Heritage and Snoop's Sporting Passion
During his visit to the curling venue, Snoop Dogg even took to the ice himself to attempt sweeping a granite stone, demonstrating his genuine interest in the sport. Curling, which originated in Scotland during the 16th century, involves athletes sliding stones towards a target area known as the house while teammates sweep the ice to influence the stone's path. Beyond his Olympic involvement, Snoop Dogg is a well-known sports enthusiast and co-owner of the Championship football club Swansea City, further highlighting his multifaceted engagement with the sporting world.
The British curlers' appeal underscores the unique intersection of celebrity culture and Olympic sports, creating a memorable narrative that transcends traditional athletic coverage. As Mouat and Dodds continue their campaign to obtain the cherished photograph, their story adds a human and relatable dimension to the high-stakes environment of international competition.
