Anastasia Kucherova, a Russian architect who has resided in Milan for fourteen years, has publicly disclosed that she was the volunteer who carried the Ukrainian team placard during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. This revelation came after she initially went unrecognisable in a hooded silver puffer coat and dark glasses, concealing her identity as she led five Ukrainian athletes into the iconic San Siro stadium.
A Deliberate Act of Resistance and Solidarity
In an interview with the Associated Press and a post to her 879 Instagram followers, Kucherova explained that her choice to volunteer for Ukraine was a conscious decision. She stated that while country assignments were initially meant to be random, the choreographer later asked volunteers for preferences, allowing her to select Ukraine specifically. Kucherova emphasised that this small action was intended to demonstrate that not all Russians support the ongoing conflict, saying, "When you walk by the side of these people you realise they have every human right to feel hatred towards any Russian. Still, I think it's important to do even a small action to show them that maybe not all the people are thinking the same way."
She added that the Ukrainian athletes immediately recognised her Russian origins and addressed her in Russian, which she interpreted as a sign of a "profound connection" between Russians and Ukrainians that could persist if not for the war. Kucherova highlighted the significance of her act on the second anniversary of dissident Alexei Navalny's poisoning death, viewing it as a reminder that the war continues despite daily life proceeding elsewhere.

Kucherova reflected on the harsh reality faced by Ukrainians, noting, "Ukrainians don't have any possibility to avoid these thoughts or to ignore the existence of war. So it is their reality. They keep loving each other, getting married or doing sports, coming to the Olympics. But all of this is happening [against] a devastating background."
