Paralympian James Barnes-Miller Embraces Fatherhood Ahead of Final Winter Games
For Paralympic snowboarder James Barnes-Miller, the journey to the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics has taken on a profoundly new dimension. The 36-year-old athlete from Broadstairs is preparing for his third and final appearance at the Games, but this time, his priorities have shifted dramatically following the birth of his daughter in late 2025.
A New Perspective on Training and Rest
Since becoming a father, Barnes-Miller has had to completely reassess his approach to preparation and recovery. "Before I was like, 'Oh no, I haven't got my nine hours' and now if I get five hours unbroken sleep that feels like a win," he admitted. This adjustment has forced him to redefine what constitutes effective rest, as he juggles the demands of elite sport with the responsibilities of parenthood.
Despite the challenges, Barnes-Miller reports that fatherhood has had a positive impact on his performance. "Previously, I'd be at home thinking about it and overanalysing it and now I don't have time or the energy for that," he explained. "When I'm at home, I'm in dad mode and I can come away and reset from racing mode. It's been good for that."
Pursuing Paralympic Success
Barnes-Miller is determined to secure his first Paralympic medal at Milano Cortina 2026, building on an impressive career that includes:
- A silver and two bronze medals at World Championships
- Multiple World Cup podium finishes
- Recent success with his first World Cup podium in banked slalom since 2022
The presence of his wife and daughter at the Cortina D'Ampezzo slopes could provide crucial emotional support as he competes for that elusive Paralympic honour.
The Importance of Sleep in Elite Sport
Recognising sleep as a critical component of athletic performance, Dreams has extended its partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB. This collaboration aims to help British athletes optimise their sleep, recovery, and overall performance.
Barnes-Miller, who has historically struggled with sleep, emphasised its importance: "Before a race it's always hard to get a great sleep because you're apprehensive about the racing, so you're trying to get as much sleep as you can to feel as good as you can." He has made personal sacrifices to improve his sleep quality, including abstaining from alcohol.
Looking Ahead to Milano Cortina 2026
As he approaches his final Paralympic appearance, Barnes-Miller maintains a balanced perspective. "I want to go out, I want to enjoy myself and I want to put on the best show I can no matter what happens," he stated. "As long as I'm in a good headspace and I'm riding well, I'll be stoked."
With renewed motivation from fatherhood and continued support from partnerships like that with Dreams, James Barnes-Miller is poised to make his daughter proud as he competes on the world stage one last time.
