Newcastle United have secured the signing of Arsenal prospect Kyran Thompson on a free transfer, beating Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City to the highly-rated 16-year-old winger. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, which represents a significant coup for the Magpies after missing out on several other targets this summer.
Thompson's rise through the ranks
Thompson, who turns 17 in September, has already made his Under-21 debut in Premier League 2 after joining Arsenal from West Ham two years ago. The winger has also earned four caps for England Under-17s. Arsenal were working on a new contract for the teenager after his scholarship terms expired but failed to reach an agreement, allowing Newcastle to step in.
Blow for Arsenal's youth development
The departure is a blow to Arsenal, who have prioritised promoting academy talent under Mikel Arteta. Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, and Max Dowman have all broken into the first team in the last 18 months, while Marli Salmon and Jaden Dixon made their senior debuts last season. Thompson was expected to follow that path, but instead moves to St James' Park.
Newcastle's transfer frustrations
The signing of Thompson comes after Newcastle missed out on Johan Manzambi, a 20-year-old midfielder from Freiburg, who joined Aston Villa for £51m. The Magpies also lost out on Victor Munoz to Liverpool last month and have endured a summer of transfer frustrations in 2025, including missing Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool and Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United. Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon has moved to Barcelona for nearly £70m and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for £100m.
