Finland's Ski Jumping Coach Dismissed from Winter Olympics Following Alcohol Incident

Finland's ski jumping coach Igor Medved has been sent home from the Winter Olympics due to an alcohol-related issue, with officials confirming his removal and Medved issuing a public apology for his actions.

Official Confirmation and Team Response

Anne Hanninen, the head of elite sports at the Finnish Olympic Committee, announced the decision in a press conference, stating that Medved had been relieved of his duties for the remainder of the Games. She emphasised the seriousness of the violation, noting, 'Medved has travelled home today. This is about alcohol-related issues. We take rule violations very seriously and will act quickly in the matter.'

It was clarified that the incident occurred away from coaching responsibilities but still breached strict team regulations. Marleena Valtasola, executive director of the Finnish Ski Federation, added that Medved's future with the team would be evaluated after the Olympics, saying, 'An unpleasant situation has arisen: alcohol was consumed in violation of team rules. We have decided that Medved will not participate in the Olympics. The other issues will be discussed with him after the Games.'

Medved's Apology and Explanation

In a voice note to Yle Sport, Medved, a former ski jumper from Slovenia, expressed remorse for his behaviour. He apologised to athletes, coaches, support staff, the Olympic Committee, the Ski Association, and fans, stating, 'I am not proud of myself.' He explained that after a competition, he was invited to Slovenia's gold medal celebration, had not eaten, and the alcohol affected him excessively.

Impact on the Team and Future Steps

Valtasola highlighted the priority of maintaining team focus and serenity, noting, 'Now it is essential to safeguard the athletes' concentration and restore serenity to the team and for Igor.' She assured that the team has a solid staff in place to manage the situation effectively, adding, 'We have a solid staff in place and we are confident we can handle the situation in the best possible way.'

The incident underscores the strict adherence to conduct rules in elite sports, with Finland taking swift action to address the breach while ensuring minimal disruption to their Olympic campaign.
