Italian Biathlete Tommaso Giacomel Undergoes Heart Surgery After Mid-Race Collapse
Biathlete Tommaso Giacomel Has Heart Surgery After Race Withdrawal

Italian biathlete Tommaso Giacomel has undergone a successful minor heart operation after being forced to withdraw from a crucial Olympic event last week due to alarming breathing problems. The 25-year-old athlete, who recently secured a mixed relay silver medal at the Winter Olympics on February 8, collapsed mid-race during the 15km mass start event on Friday while leading the competition.

Mid-Race Medical Emergency

Giacomel described the terrifying experience in a heartfelt Instagram post on the day of the incident. 'Right after the second prone my body somehow stopped working properly and I was really struggling to breathe and to move, therefore I had to stop,' he wrote. 'Worst feeling I have ever experienced in my life so far. I tried to ski really slow the first part of the third lap but my body wasn’t allowing me to ski anymore.'

He added, 'It’s devastating. It’s devastating to stop but there wasn’t anything I could do against my own body today.' The sudden withdrawal shocked the biathlon community, given Giacomel's strong performance earlier in the Olympics and his position at the front of the pack.

Successful Surgical Intervention

Four days after his withdrawal, the Italian Winter Sports Federation released an official statement revealing the medical cause behind Giacomel's collapse. Medical examinations 'revealed an atrial conduction abnormality, which recommended a subsequent ablation, which has already been performed and was a complete success'.

The federation confirmed that the procedure was minor and went entirely according to plan. Giacomel is scheduled to be discharged from the hospital on Thursday and will undergo further medical evaluations in two weeks. Once these checks are completed, doctors expect him to be cleared to resume regular training activities.

Recovery Timeline and Competition Impact

As a result of the surgery, Giacomel will miss significant upcoming competitions during his recovery period. He will not participate in the next stage of the World Cup, scheduled from March 5-8 in Finland. Additionally, he is not expected to compete the following weekend in Estonia or in the season finale in Oslo from March 19-22.

The International Biathlon Union expressed support for the athlete, reposting a social media message on his Instagram account that said 'Forza, Tommy' and wished him a smooth and speedy recovery.

Season Performance and Standing

Despite this setback, Giacomel has had an outstanding season. The silver medalist has won four individual World Cup races and currently holds second place in the overall standings, trailing leader Eric Perrot of France by just 37 points. His absence from upcoming events will undoubtedly impact the championship race, but the primary focus remains on his health and full recovery.

The biathlon world now watches closely as one of its top athletes navigates this unexpected health challenge, hoping for his swift return to the sport he has excelled in this season.
