Wayne Rooney has been warned he will receive a text from Cristiano Ronaldo by Olivier Giroud following their analysis ahead of the Portugal icon's opening World Cup match. The former England international said that his former team-mate would be 'raging that' Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi all got on the scoresheet.
Ronaldo, 41, becomes the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match against the DR Congo as he looks to add the trophy missing from his cabinet. He will be tasked with rediscovering his youth to match the start that his rivals had enjoyed in the tournament.
Mbappe and Haaland scored a brace before Messi delivered a hat-trick. Rooney knew exactly how Ronaldo would have reacted to that.
"He'll have been raging," said Rooney, sparking laughter in the BBC studio. "In a good way."
"You're going to receive a text Wayne, be careful," 2018 World Cup winner Giroud interjected.
