Max Verstappen is mounting a formidable challenge in the Formula One title race, having closed a 104-point gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri to just 40 points in four races. The defending champion's resurgence has put both Piastri and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris under pressure as they head into the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton, who battled Verstappen to the wire in 2021, has warned the McLaren drivers of the Dutchman's ruthless nature. “You really have to be cut-throat and that is what Max is. He is going to take this from them if they don’t do the same,” Hamilton said. “Max has won it four times so he knows what it’s like and being the hunter is much easier than being the defender.”
Verstappen is relishing the challenge, describing the “positive pressure” as he aims to extend his impressive record in Mexico City, where he has won five of the last seven races. The Red Bull driver's car has improved significantly with a new floor and front wing, allowing it to run closer to the ground and giving Verstappen the confidence to push harder.
McLaren have ceased development on their car, while Red Bull's upgrades have made the RB21 more competitive. The high-altitude Mexico City track, with its thin air and bumpy surface, is expected to suit the Red Bull, putting further pressure on Norris and Piastri to avoid errors that could allow Verstappen to close the gap even more.
