Lando Norris secured his first victory of the Formula One season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading a dominant McLaren performance at the Hungaroring. The defending world champion drove an assured race from pole, overcoming an early loss of the lead to teammate Oscar Piastri at the second corner. Norris retook the lead through pit stops and powered to a commanding 15-second advantage over Max Verstappen by the chequered flag.
Piastri's race unravelled after he was blocked and struck by Carlos Sainz while attempting to lap the Williams driver. The Australian, who had been leading at the time, was left furious, exclaiming over team radio: “Is he fucking stupid or what? Get out of the fucking way, you idiot.” A five-second penalty was handed to Sainz, but Piastri later retired with a gearbox problem, leaving Norris unchallenged at the front.
Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive campaign by finishing third after starting from seventh following a grid penalty. The Italian's result extended his lead in the drivers' championship to 50 points over Lewis Hamilton and 59 over George Russell. Russell, meanwhile, suffered a further setback when his car went into anti-stall on the grid, dropping him to 20th; he recovered to seventh but was left ruing another stroke of misfortune.
Lewis Hamilton battled hard, including a thrilling exchange with Verstappen, but a late third pit stop under a virtual safety car cost him track position. He crossed the line fourth but was penalised five seconds for speeding in the pitlane, dropping behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Hamilton felt the team's strategy call was wrong.
Norris's victory marked McLaren's record 14th win at the Hungaroring and brought a palpable sense of relief to the team. While Antonelli's consistent performances keep him firmly in control of the title fight, Norris's pace suggests McLaren may yet challenge. Elsewhere, F1 confirmed a new race at Malaysia's Sepang circuit on 4 October, slotting between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix.
