Racing driver Juha Miettinen has tragically died following a serious multi-car collision during the ADAC 24h Nurburgring Qualifiers in Germany. The incident, which involved seven competitors, occurred early in the race on 18 April 2026 and led to an immediate halt in competition by race control.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome
According to a statement from the organisers, emergency services arrived quickly at the scene after the collision. Despite their efforts, 66-year-old Miettinen, who was driving a BMW 325i, could not be saved. He was extracted from the vehicle and later died at the medical centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.
The other six drivers involved in the accident were taken to the Medical Centre and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations. Organisers confirmed that none of these individuals are in a life-threatening condition, providing some relief amid the tragedy.

Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen, who was set to feature in the qualifiers but was not competing at the time of the incident, shared his condolences on Instagram. In a post to his Stories, he wrote, "Shocked by what's happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones."
Verstappen's message highlighted the inherent risks in motorsport, resonating with fans and the racing community worldwide.
Race Organisers' Response and Memorial Plans
The organisers of the 24 Hours of Nurburgring issued a full statement detailing the events and expressing their sympathies. They confirmed that the race would not resume on Saturday evening as a mark of respect. Additionally, a minute's silence will be held in Miettinen's honour during the grid formation when competition resumes at 1pm local time on Sunday.
The statement emphasised that the thoughts of everyone involved are with the bereaved family of Juha Miettinen, underscoring the sombre mood within the motorsport community.
