As the August bank holiday approaches, millions of UK drivers are preparing for what is expected to be one of the busiest travel periods of the year. While many will check tyres, fuel and oil, experts are warning not to overlook a smaller but equally essential item: the car key.
Car Keys Solutions reports that spring and summer are peak seasons for key-related callouts, with demand surging during long weekends. Owner George Stoica said: 'A bank holiday breakdown caused by key failure is one of the most frustrating things for drivers. Taking five minutes before you set off to check your keys can save you hundreds of pounds and a ruined holiday.'
Common mistakes include leaving key fobs on hot dashboards or car seats, where direct sunlight can damage electronics and drain batteries. Many drivers also misplace keys in crowded pubs, service stations or during outdoor activities such as beach trips and festivals. Forgotten or lost keys are among the most frequent reasons for summertime callouts.
Relying on a spare key can also backfire if it has been left unused for months or years. The battery may be dead or the key may no longer be programmed to the vehicle. Most key fob batteries last only 18 to 24 months before fading, and failure often occurs at the worst possible time when garages are shut and locksmiths are busy.
To avoid disappointment, Car Keys Solutions recommends testing both main and spare keys before departure, replacing batteries older than 18 months, keeping keys out of direct sunlight, and securing them in a zipped bag or attaching them to a bright keyring when outdoors.
