Nearly 12 years after his catastrophic ski accident, Michael Schumacher is reportedly no longer bedbound. The Formula One legend can now sit up and be moved around his Swiss estate by nurses, according to a family source.
Schumacher, 57, sustained severe brain trauma when he struck his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in Meribel, France, in December 2013. The impact cracked his helmet shell and required two emergency operations to relieve cranial pressure. He spent months in a coma before being transferred home in 2014.
His condition has been kept strictly private by his family, with only a few trusted individuals allowed visits, including former Ferrari boss Jean Todt and driver Ross Brawn. The family recently faced an extortion attempt, with three people convicted in early 2025 for trying to blackmail them with stolen photos and medical documents.
While Schumacher remains unable to walk and communicates primarily through his eyes, the source said he appears to understand some of what happens around him. A previous court document described him as 'partially dependent, requiring assistance'. The news offers a rare glimmer of hope after years of silence from the Schumacher family.
