Rory McIlroy is at risk of a PGA Tour suspension after playing only nine events in 2026, falling short of the required 15 per calendar year. The same rule led to a one-year ban for golf legend Seve Ballesteros in 1985.
McIlroy's Event Count Falls Short
McIlroy has deliberately reduced his PGA Tour schedule over the past two seasons, focusing on practice rounds for majors. As of June 2026, he has competed in just nine Tour events and does not plan to play the Wyndham Championship or 3M Open. He will reach 11 events if he plays The Open and Scottish Open as scheduled. Adding the three FedEx Cup play-off events he played last year would bring his total to 14—still one short of the 15-event minimum required to maintain PGA Tour membership.
Ballesteros Precedent Looms
In 1985, Seve Ballesteros played only nine PGA Tour events at a similar career stage, resulting in a suspension of his membership for the 1986 season. While it is unlikely the PGA Tour will enforce a ban on McIlroy, its marquee European star, the precedent raises questions about consistency in punishment. The Tour may seek a loophole to keep McIlroy eligible for 2027, but granting exceptions could set a problematic precedent.
World Cup Fans Energize Travelers Championship
Meanwhile, at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut, Norwegian supporters brought World Cup energy to TPC River Highlands. Viktor Hovland and Kristoffer Reitan, both in contention, received a “rowdy” reception from fans who performed the ‘Viking Row’ chant between rounds. Norway was playing France in a World Cup 2026 match in Boston later that day.
“I think the games and the golf events set up quite nicely, so they can make a pit stop here for the interested fans or the golf-interested fans,” Reitan said after Thursday’s first round. “So it sets up quite nicely for that. And it's cool for them to make a pit stop here and for me to experience a miniature version of what the football players get to experience.”
Hovland sits second on the leaderboard after two rounds, two strokes behind Scottie Scheffler, while Reitan is tied for 14th. Norway’s World Cup fortunes were less bright, as they lost 4-1 to France, but they have already secured a spot in the round of 32, facing Ivory Coast in Texas on Tuesday.
