Record 6,800 Runners in Biggest-Ever Porthcawl 10K

A record-breaking 6,800 runners took part in the sixth edition of the Brecon Carreg Porthcawl 10K, making it the biggest event in its history. The race, held on 5 July 2026, formed the third event in the Run 4 Wales 10K Series and attracted thousands of spectators to the seaside town.

Men's and Women's Winners

Omar Ahmed won the men's race in 29 minutes and 44 seconds, though he still holds the course record of 29:08 set in 2024. Charlotte Taylor claimed victory in the women's event with a time of 34:22, continuing her strong form after winning the Barry Island 10K earlier this year. Taylor set a new course record at that event.

Ahmed expressed his delight at returning to Porthcawl, saying: "I'm so happy to have won today. I was really excited to be back in Porthcawl, it's one of my favourite places. It was a bit windy which was difficult as there was no one around me helping me, but I really enjoyed it." He is also set to compete at the Kidney Wales Cardiff 10K in September.

Taylor praised the atmosphere created by the crowds: "It was windy out there so I tried to use the guys and tuck in for a bit and it was fun coming down the final turn and into the finish. I had a good flow going there so I enjoyed it. There was a great atmosphere all along the course and everyone was in good spirits which was helpful."

Scenic Route and Community Focus

The course showcased Porthcawl landmarks including Newton Bay, Trecco Bay, Sandy Bay, Trecco Bay Holiday Park, Rest Bay, and the iconic Porthcawl Lighthouse. Runners finished with a sprint along the Lower Promenade to cheers from thousands of spectators.

The event raised funds for lead charity Ty Hafan, a children's hospice providing care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Junior events including the Toddler Dash, Future Challengers race, and Fun Run followed the main race.

Organisers' Thanks and Future Plans

Run 4 Wales chief executive Matt Newman thanked participants, spectators, and volunteers: "It's been another great day in Porthcawl for our biggest ever Brecon Carreg Porthcawl 10K. Thanks to all of our runners and the thousands of spectators who came out to cheer them on, and all of our Extra Milers who gave up their free time to help make the event a success." He also acknowledged title sponsor Brecon Carreg, lead charity Ty Hafan, and partners including High 5, Waterton Motor Group, Bridgend County Borough Council, and Coopah.

Brecon Carreg Brand Manager Eleri Morgan congratulated participants and highlighted the company's commitment to supporting the event and its environmental initiatives: "A huge congratulations to everyone who took part in this year's event."

Entries are now open for the 2027 Porthcawl 10K on Sunday 27 June, with a special early bird offer for the first 500 to sign up.
