Lawrence Shankland and Thelo Aasgaard scored from the penalty spot to give Derek McInnes a victory in his first match in the Ibrox dugout as Rangers boss. But there was plenty for the former Hearts manager to ponder with just days to go until the season gets underway.
Goalkeeper and Defence
Ivor Pandur (6) had his first chance to show he can fill the gloves of Jack Butland, tipping a Jakob Breum effort from point-blank range narrowly wide, though he was denied a clean sheet. Ross McCrorie (4) was caught out chasing the flying French attacking line down the flank in the first half but looked more assured in the second. Emmanuel Fernandez (6) was caught out on a couple of occasions during the French side's first-half onslaught but launched his usual sprawling passes to drive his side forward. Ben Godfrey (4), handed the armband, had a couple of ropey moments as he attempts to form a partnership with Fernandez. Tuur Rommens (5) made a mistake that allowed the leveller, robbed in possession before Breum's tap-in.
Midfield
Tochi Chukwuani (5) had a tough shift as the visitors overran the midfield for long periods in the first half. Dan Neil (6), the new set-piece taker, showed flashes of neat touches and clever crosses, unlocking the St Etienne defence late on with a pass to play in Miovski for the decisive penalty. Mohamed Diomande (7), deployed in a higher area by McInnes, won the early penalty and showed plenty of promise in a new attacking role. Findlay Curtis (7) was always a threat, picking out dangerous crosses and showing experience to win key fouls when Rangers were suffering.
Attack
Lawrence Shankland (7) got his first goal at Ibrox as a Rangers player inside the opening minutes, already appearing to sew seeds of a relationship with strike partner Chermiti. Youssef Chermiti (5) chased everything as the new-look front three suffered initial teething problems, hitting the bar.
Substitutes
Cammy Devlin (6) instantly added bite and energy as an anchor in midfield after replacing Curtis at half-time. Thelo Aasgaard (5) showed pace down the left flank and capped his performance with a penalty strike. Ryan Naderi (2) was busy but didn't have a clear-cut chance. Bojan Miovski (3) did well to win the penalty late on. Paul Nsio (2) offered something different down the flank at right-back. Lyall Cameron (1) had little time to make an impression after coming on in midfield.
