Tragedy Strikes Nürburgring as Veteran Driver Juha Miettinen Dies in Qualifying Crash
The motorsport world is in mourning after a fatal multi-car collision during the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers in Germany on Saturday. Veteran racing driver Juha Miettinen, aged 66, lost his life following the serious incident, which also left six other competitors injured.
Race Halted Immediately After Serious Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up
According to official statements from race organisers, the catastrophic accident occurred early during the qualifying session, involving a total of seven drivers. Race control acted swiftly, immediately halting all competition to allow emergency services to conduct extensive recovery and rescue operations at the iconic German circuit.
Despite the rapid arrival of medical teams, Miettinen could not be saved. After being extracted from his vehicle, he was transported to the on-site medical centre where all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful. The Finnish driver was pronounced dead at the facility.

The six other drivers involved in the collision were taken to the Medical Centre and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations. Organisers have confirmed that none of the injured competitors are in life-threatening condition, providing some small relief amidst the tragedy.
In response to the fatal incident, organisers announced that Saturday evening's racing schedule would not resume. The qualifying session forms part of the build-up to the prestigious 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race.
Max Verstappen Among Those Paying Tribute
The qualifying event had been set to feature four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, though the Dutch driver was not competing at the time of the accident. Verstappen took to his Instagram Stories to express his shock and condolences.
"Shocked by what's happened today," Verstappen wrote. "Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones."
Minute's Silence Planned as Racing Community Mourns
Organisers have confirmed that competition will resume on Sunday at 1pm local time, with a minute's silence scheduled to be held in Miettinen's honour during the grid formation. This tribute will allow the racing community to collectively remember the veteran driver before competition continues.
The official statement from race organisers expressed profound sadness: "The thoughts of everyone involved in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring are with the bereaved family of Juha Miettinen."
