Lando Norris emerged victorious in a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix, holding off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by just seven-tenths of a second. The race, which served as the finale to the first half of the Formula One season, saw the two title protagonists go wheel-to-wheel in a tense battle that went down to the final laps.
Norris's win came courtesy of a bold strategy call, switching from a planned two-stop to a one-stop after a poor start dropped him to fifth. Team principal Andrea Stella admitted they had not believed a one-stop was possible, but Norris agreed to the gamble, which proved inspired as he gained track position and held on despite Piastri's late charge.
Piastri, who had led the championship coming into the race, was visibly disappointed after feeling victory slip away. His engineer's attempt to console him by reminding him he still led the standings was met with silence. The Australian's lead over Norris now stands at just nine points after 14 rounds, as McLaren secured their 200th race win and another one-two finish.
Charles Leclerc, who started from pole, led for much of the race but fell away due to a loss of balance, later attributed to damage. He finished fourth behind George Russell. The summer break now begins, with the championship battle finely poised.
