Lando Norris secured pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix with a stunning lap at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, outpacing title rivals and boosting his championship hopes. The McLaren driver beat Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to second and third, while championship contenders Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri managed only fifth and eighth respectively.
Norris's pole is a significant statement after Verstappen's recent resurgence, which saw the defending champion close the gap to just 40 points behind Piastri and 14 behind Norris. A win for Norris, combined with Piastri finishing below fourth, would put the Briton back at the top of the standings for the first time since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
“I’m happy to be back on pole, it’s been a long time,” Norris said. “It’s one of those laps where you don’t know what happened... I’m here to win. I’ll be looking forward, I have some quick guys behind me. I’m not expecting it to be easy.”
Piastri, meanwhile, struggled for pace, failing to qualify higher than eighth, later promoted to seventh due to a grid penalty for Williams's Carlos Sainz. The Australian has not qualified better than third since the Dutch GP, a factor in his championship lead being eroded. Hamilton, in his first top-three qualifying of the season with Ferrari, said: “I’m really happy... P3 is the perfect spot at this track, so I’m hoping to make the most of that.”
McLaren, who last took pole here in 1990, showed strong race pace in simulations, and Norris's commanding performance suggests he will be difficult to beat in the race. The long run to turn one could prove crucial, but Norris's form indicates a mighty challenge for his rivals.
