McLaren Star's Touching Tribute to Former Mentor

McLaren driver Lando Norris delivered a poignant and personal tribute to his late friend and former colleague, Gil de Ferran, during the first day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain. The British driver honoured the memory of the former McLaren sporting director by sporting a special signature helmet design, a powerful gesture on the track where the 2024 season officially begins.

A Dear Friend Remembered

Norris took to Instagram to explain the emotional significance behind the helmet, which featured the same design that de Ferran used when he won the iconic Indy 500 race in 2003. The French-Brazilian racing legend and former IndyCar champion passed away suddenly in December after suffering a heart attack at the age of 56.

In his social media post, the 24-year-old driver expressed his deep personal loss, stating: "We lost someone really special to us at the end of last year, he was a dear friend of mine and he’d been with me pretty much since I came into Formula 1." Norris, who has driven for McLaren since his F1 debut in 2019, worked closely with de Ferran for two years, describing him as someone who provided crucial support both on and off the circuit.

Overcoming Delays for a Meaningful Run

The tribute almost faced an unexpected delay. Norris's first track appearance during the afternoon session on Wednesday was postponed by an hour due to an unspecified problem with the MCL35. However, the team resolved the issue, allowing Norris to eventually take to the Bahrain International Circuit, ensuring his heartfelt message was seen.

His teammate, Oscar Piastri, handled driving duties in the morning session, setting the fourth-fastest time. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen topped the timing sheets, signalling a competitive season ahead.

This touching act of remembrance comes shortly after Norris solidified his future with the Woking-based team, having signed a new long-term contract that extends his partnership with McLaren until at least 2026.
