McLaren's Lando Norris has launched a scathing critique of his Formula 1 rivals following what he described as "dangerous" tactics during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
The British driver, who secured an impressive P7 on the grid, expressed frustration at competitors deliberately slowing down in fast corners to create space for their flying laps. "People doing it in the high-speed corners is just stupid," Norris told reporters. "It's so dangerous."
Norris Calls for Stricter Enforcement
Norris highlighted the particular risks at Spa's famous Eau Rouge-Raidillon complex, where drivers were reportedly backing off unexpectedly. "You have to respect the track limits," he insisted, suggesting race officials need to take a harder line on such behaviour.
The 23-year-old's comments come after a dramatic qualifying session that saw championship leader Max Verstappen take pole position despite a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.
McLaren's Mixed Fortunes
While Norris impressed, teammate Oscar Piastri struggled to P9, with the Australian rookie admitting he "didn't quite put it together" in the final session. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start alongside Verstappen on the front row after qualifying second fastest.
The incident has reignited debate about track etiquette in Formula 1, particularly at high-speed circuits like Spa. With changeable weather forecast for Sunday's race, drivers may face even more challenging conditions to navigate.
