Lando Norris has dismissed complaints from McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after the pair collided during the Singapore Grand Prix, insisting his overtaking move was legitimate. The incident occurred on the opening lap at the Marina Bay circuit, where Norris attempted to pass Piastri but clipped the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, causing contact between the two McLarens.
“Anyone on the grid would have done exactly the same thing as I did, so if you fault me for just going on the inside of a big gap then you should not be in Formula One,” Norris said. “There was nothing wrong with what I did.” The stewards took no action, and Norris finished third, ahead of Piastri in fourth, narrowing the gap to championship leader Verstappen to 22 points.
Piastri was furious at the time, claiming Norris had barged him out of the way and that the team should have intervened to return the place. However, he later said he would reserve judgment until a team debriefing. “I need to look more at the replays and in more detail and come to my conclusion then,” Piastri said.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said the team would review the incident. “We have to put everything in perspective. It’s the comments from a driver in a Formula One car, there’s the heat of the moment. As usual we will have a good conversation, build from there and come up stronger,” he said.
