NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has been discharged from hospital in Florida, just two days after a terrifying crash during the Daytona 500. His team, Roush Fenway, confirmed the news via Twitter, sharing a picture of Newman leaving Halifax Medical Centre in Daytona Beach, holding hands with his two daughters.
The team's statement noted that Newman is 'fully alert and walking around' and has been 'joking around with staff, friends and family' while spending time with his daughters. His wife, Krissie, from whom he recently announced an amicable split, filmed his departure, calling it the 'best sight ever'.
The crash occurred on the final lap of the race, when Newman's car hit the outside wall, flipped over, caught fire after colliding with another car mid-air, and slid across the finish line on its roof. Such an accident would have once been fatal, but significant improvements in car and track safety prevented serious injury. Newman has long been an advocate for enhanced safety measures in NASCAR.
