In a dramatic twist on the opening episode of the new series of Top Gear, Michael Schumacher unmasked himself as the show's mysterious test driver, the Stig. The former Formula One champion removed the iconic white helmet in front of a live studio audience after presenter Jeremy Clarkson urged him to reveal his identity.
Clarkson feigned ignorance, asking Schumacher his name before the driver became famous as the Stig, then excitedly announced to the audience: "It's Michael Schumacher!" The revelation was met with applause, though viewers and fans debated whether it was genuine or a comedic stunt.
Clarkson had previously promised to unveil the Stig's true identity on the show. The Stig, who test drives cars around the Top Gear track in Dunsfold, Surrey, and coaches guest drivers for the "Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car" segment, has long been a closely guarded secret. Speculation had linked several drivers to the role, including Ben Collins, a racing driver and stuntman for Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace.
During the interview, Clarkson quizzed Schumacher about rumours surrounding the Stig. When asked if he was illegal in 17 US states, Schumacher replied: "No, it's much exaggerated. It's only nine." Clarkson also questioned a rumour that the Stig only knows two facts about ducks, both wrong. Schumacher responded, "Well obviously they can fly," prompting Clarkson to retort: "No, they were right, you don't know anything about ducks."
Perry McCarthy, a former Formula One driver, was the original Stig, appearing in black overalls during the first two series.
