Man Utd's First Summer Deal for Ederson Collapses

Manchester United have pulled the plug on their deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils had agreed a £35 million fee for the Brazilian midfielder, who was expected to be their first summer signing. However, the club has decided not to proceed with the transfer, citing reservations about Ederson's fitness.

Injury Concerns Derail Transfer

Ederson suffered a meniscus injury last summer and had ankle problems during the 2023-24 season, following a hamstring strain in the 2022-23 campaign. Although Atalanta believe the 25-year-old is fit and are open to reintegrating him into their first-team squad, United's medical team had concerns. Ederson had even undergone the first part of a medical ahead of the move, but the deal has now collapsed.

Impact on United's Midfield Plans

The failed transfer is a significant blow for Manchester United, who have already missed out on top midfield targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Anderson moved to Manchester City for £116 million, while Fernandes joined Tottenham for £85 million. United are set to add Chelsea's Andrey Santos to their ranks in a £50 million package deal, but Santos will not be joined by compatriot Ederson. The club is now searching for alternative midfield options, especially with Manuel Ugarte sidelined for an extended period due to a knee ligament injury sustained while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup.
