Hamilton backs Antonelli for Mercedes 2025 seat

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has thrown his support behind rising star Kimi Antonelli, suggesting the 17-year-old could be a strong contender for his Mercedes seat in the 2025 season.

Hamilton, who will join Ferrari next year, made the comments ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. The British racing icon believes Antonelli has shown remarkable talent in junior categories and could be ready for the step up to F1.

Hamilton's Endorsement

"I think Kimi's a great talent," Hamilton told reporters. "I've been watching his progress and he's definitely one to watch for the future. Mercedes has a history of nurturing young drivers, and I think he could be an exciting choice."

The young Italian driver currently competes in Formula 2 and has been part of Mercedes' junior program since 2019. His rapid progression through the ranks has caught the attention of many in the paddock.

Mercedes' Dilemma

With Hamilton's departure to Ferrari, Mercedes faces a crucial decision about who will partner George Russell in 2025. Team principal Toto Wolff has previously stated they would consider both experienced drivers and young talents for the seat.

Antonelli's potential promotion would follow in the footsteps of other young drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who made their F1 debuts as teenagers.

Belgian Grand Prix Focus

While speculation about 2025 continues, Hamilton remains focused on the current season. "Right now, my priority is performing at my best for Mercedes," he said. "We've got important races coming up, starting with Spa this weekend."

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar, known for its unpredictable weather and high-speed corners.
