Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has publicly backed rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli as a potential successor for his Mercedes seat when he departs for Ferrari in 2025.
The British racing legend, speaking ahead of this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, praised the 17-year-old Italian prodigy who's currently competing in Formula 2. "He's clearly got enormous talent," Hamilton remarked about Antonelli. "I think he's one of the stars of the future."
Mercedes' Youth Movement
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been openly considering Antonelli for the 2025 drive, despite the youngster's relative inexperience. The Austrian team boss has previously stated he's willing to take a "bold" approach to replacing Hamilton.
Hamilton's endorsement carries significant weight in the paddock. "I've seen what he's done in the junior formulas and that's always a good indication of what's to come," the 39-year-old champion added.
The Pressure of Expectations
While Antonelli shows immense promise, some experts question whether thrusting him into a top team so early might be premature. The Italian only made his F2 debut this season after skipping F3 entirely.
Hamilton acknowledged the challenges: "It's a lot of pressure to be under, but he seems to have the temperament to deal with it." The Mercedes star recalled his own early career struggles when joining McLaren as a rookie in 2007.
Belgian Grand Prix Preview
As the F1 circus arrives at Spa-Francorchamps, all eyes will be on Hamilton's performance in what could be his final Belgian GP for Mercedes. The Silver Arrows have shown improved form recently, with Hamilton securing back-to-back podiums in Spain and Austria.
Meanwhile, Antonelli continues his F2 campaign, knowing strong performances could cement his case for the coveted Mercedes seat. The young Italian currently sits sixth in the championship standings.
