Julie Welag, 48, a golf tour operator from Ohio, traveled with her husband Mark Welag, 52, and sons Jason, 20, and Eli, 11. She told the Liverpool Echo: “We’re from Ohio so it’s a big trip for us and the boys. We’ve done all the major golf tournaments so this is the last one to tick off the list. We arrived like three hours ago so we’re looking forward to spending some time in Liverpool.”
Jason Kamler, 51, and his son Henry Kamler, nine, journeyed from Wisconsin. Jason said: “It’s our first time at Birkdale but we’re massive golf fans. We were in Ireland last week and played at Hillside yesterday and are playing at Liverpool tomorrow. My wife and family are coming over at the end of the week and we’re going on vacation in Scotland. It’s our first time at Birkdale but not my first Open, we went to Portrush last year.”
Tom Cavanagh, 32, from Sheffield, attended with his grandparents. He commented: “We’ve had a great time. They’re big into golf so we’ve been here for the past couple of days. We’ve come from Sheffield and just done the Sunday and Monday. We’re heading back tomorrow but it’s been great.”
