The President of motorsport's global governing body, the FIA, is embroiled in a major scandal following damning allegations from a senior female official. The claims paint a picture of an organisation hostile to women and intolerant of internal criticism.
In a bombshell internal letter obtained by the media, a high-ranking FIA official has accused President Mohammed Ben Sulayem of creating a culture of fear and of 'systematically excluding' women from key positions. The letter, sent to the FIA's membership, describes an environment where dissent is silenced and senior figures are sidelined.
'Unacceptable' Treatment of a Pioneer
The controversy centres on the treatment of Laura Villars, a highly respected and pioneering figure within the FIA. Villars, who made history as the first-ever female F1 race director and starter, has allegedly been deliberately isolated and removed from her prominent role.
The internal communication states her treatment is 'not only unacceptable but also contrary to the fundamental values of our institution'. It suggests her removal from the front lines was a direct result of the current leadership's approach, which has 'not only resulted in the loss of a highly competent and dedicated professional but also sent a damaging message about the FIA's commitment to gender equality'.
A Culture of 'Suppression' and 'Dismissal'
The letter goes further, alleging a widespread pattern of behaviour under Ben Sulayem's presidency. It claims there is a 'climate of fear and suppression of dissent' that has led to the departure of numerous valued staff and officials.
Furthermore, it accuses the FIA leadership of 'dismissing the authority and responsibilities of volunteers and elected officials', thereby undermining the very governance structure of the prestigious organisation. This internal rebellion signals a deep fracture within the highest echelons of world motorsport.
FIA's Defence and Mounting Pressure
In response to the allegations, the FIA issued a statement defending its record. A spokesperson said, 'The FIA is committed to the highest standards of governance, integrity, and inclusion. We have a strong and diverse team, and we are proud of our progress in these areas.'
However, this defence is likely to be scrutinised heavily. With the new F1 season underway, the pressure is mounting on Mohammed Ben Sulayem to address these serious claims transparently and to demonstrate a genuine commitment to reforming the culture within the FIA.
