Lewis Hamilton’s stunning victory for Ferrari at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has reignited debate over whether the seven-time world champion can challenge for an eighth drivers’ title. The 41-year-old’s dominant performance, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, underscored his enduring talent when provided with the right machinery. However, with a 41-point deficit to championship leader Kimi Antonelli, the path to glory remains steep.
Ferrari’s three-stop strategy in Barcelona proved decisive, allowing Hamilton to exploit fresher tyres late in the race. Yet questions linger over whether such perfect conditions can be replicated. Friday practice saw Hamilton ninth-fastest, 1.2 seconds off the pace, highlighting the car’s inconsistency. Team principal Fred Vasseur urged caution, stating: “The approach is to go to Austria with exactly the same approach as in Barcelona, and not to think about the championship.”
Antonelli, the 19-year-old Mercedes driver, has won five consecutive races and history suggests such form is rarely overturned. He acknowledged Ferrari’s threat, noting: “One very strong point of theirs is reliability. If they keep putting in strong performances like this, they’re going to be a threat.” Meanwhile, internal tension at Mercedes between Antonelli and Russell could benefit Hamilton, as team principal Toto Wolff conceded: “There is a third party now involved in the championship fight.”
Technical regulations may also play a role. Under the new Aduo system, Ferrari will receive two upgrade opportunities in 2026 compared to Mercedes’ one, based on current performance. McLaren’s Lando Norris added: “We’re lucky Ferrari doesn’t have a better engine. They’re the class of the field in terms of cornering performance … If they make improvements on the engine side, they’ll embarrass everyone.”
