Driver Loses Consciousness in Demolition Derby Horror
A demolition derby event in rural New South Wales turned to tragedy on Saturday night when a competitor lost consciousness at the wheel and crashed into a crowd of spectators. The incident occurred at the Walcha showgrounds, a location 90 kilometres east of Tamworth, during the popular annual Walcha Motorcycle Rally.
Critical Injuries and Chaotic Aftermath
Thirteen people were injured in the devastating collision. NSW Ambulance confirmed that two men were airlifted in a critical condition to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital. One of the victims, a 54-year-old man, suffered serious spinal and hip injuries, while a man in his 30s sustained significant head injuries.
Of the other eleven patients, who ranged in age from 30 to 75, six were treated for serious but stable injuries. They were transported to hospitals in Armidale, Tamworth, and Walcha. The crash scene was described as chaotic, with shocked witnesses braving pouring rain to render first aid and even holding up tarpaulins to protect the injured.
Brother Reveals Harrowing Details of the Crash
Blake Taylor, the brother of the driver involved, Steven Taylor, shared emotional details on Facebook. He explained that his brother, a member of the 'Tha Boyz' demolition derby team, had been competing when he hit a rival's car. "As he's gone to drive forward, he's blacked out ... his foot has been wedged hard on the accelerator to the point that Steven has not stopped," Blake revealed.
The vehicle, travelling at what was described as '70 clicks, top speed', then smashed through a perimeter fence, hitting a grandstand and a tree. Blake recounted that the grandstand had been full of people moments before the impact. He expressed his profound shock and distress, stating, "I just wish this never happened. I don't wish this upon anyone." Despite growing up in the sport, Blake doubts that either he or his brother will ever compete again, calling for a renewed focus on safety in the demolition derby world.
Community leaders and MPs, including Northern Tablelands state MP Brendan Moylan and federal MP Barnaby Joyce, praised the swift response of emergency services and off-duty medical personnel. Walcha Mayor Eric Noakes described the event as a 'freak accident', emphasising that the small community's thoughts were with the victims and their families.
