Darwin Nunez endured a nightmare start to his World Cup campaign, suffering the ultimate humiliation of being substituted after just 45 minutes during Uruguay's 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia. The 26-year-old forward, currently a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, faced a barrage of criticism from fans for his anonymous performance.
Nunez's Difficult Spell Continues
Nunez has experienced a torrid time in recent months. He left Liverpool for Al-Hilal last summer in a deal worth £46.3 million plus bonuses, but his stint in the Middle East quickly went awry. After just nine goals in 24 matches, he mutually agreed to end his contract, making him available on a free transfer less than 12 months after his move.
His departure from Al-Hilal sparked rumors of a return to the Premier League, with Uruguayan outlet Carve Deportiva even claiming he could head back to Anfield. However, any return looks incredibly unlikely, despite Hugo Ekitike's long-term injury. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also shot down the report.
World Cup Performance Draws Scathing Criticism
The ex-Liverpool man did little to enhance his chances of securing a move this summer with his performance on Monday. Nunez completed just three passes in the first half before Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa hooked him at halftime, with his team trailing 1-0.
World Cup fans showed little sympathy, laying into his anonymous display. One fan wrote on X: "Darwin Nunez has done nothing this game I can't even tell if he is on the pitch." Another said: "Darwin Nunez is not good enough," while others called for his 'downfall to be studied' and described him as a ghost.
Another user added: "Darwin Nunez up front is the perfect metaphor for just how bad Uruguay are right now."
Uruguay Improves After Substitution
Nunez's case was not helped by the fact that Uruguay were much improved after the break in his absence. Two halftime substitutions, Agustin Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria, invigorated the side. Uruguay had to wait until the 80th minute for their deserved equalizer through Maximiliano Araujo and probably should have won the game, barring some poor finishing and bad luck.
Future Prospects and Liverpool Links
Nunez will hope for another chance to impress against Cape Verde on Sunday as he looks to put himself in the shop window. Despite his struggle for consistency at Liverpool, he had some inspired moments in a Reds shirt and is reportedly attracting interest from clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle.
However, Liverpool are prioritizing the signing of a winger over an out-and-out striker like Nunez, as manager Andoni Iraola faces the task of finding a suitable replacement for Mohamed Salah. RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande, who impressed in his first World Cup match with Ivory Coast, has been mentioned as a target, though the teenager comes with a hefty £86 million price tag.
There is also a suggestion that two wingers could be signed to fill the void left by Salah, who is reportedly in talks to join Real Madrid on a free transfer. PSG's Bradley Barcola is another name linked with Liverpool, having won the Champions League twice and registered 76 goal contributions during his time with the French club.
Reinforcements could also be added in midfield and defense, with the likes of Adam Wharton, Micky van de Ven, and Nathaniel Brown emerging as possible targets.
