In a finish that had the Knavesmire crowd holding its collective breath, superstar jockey William Buick delivered a masterclass in race-riding to pilot Ombudsman to a dramatic and hard-fought victory in the historic Gimcrack Stakes at York.
The Charlie Appleby-trained colt, sent off as the well-backed 11-8 favourite, did not make it easy for his rider or the legion of Godolphin supporters. Having travelled with menacing ease for much of the six-furlong contest, the race seemed to be going perfectly to script.
However, as the pack charged towards the final furlong marker, the anticipated commanding performance turned into a desperate scrap. Ombudsman appeared to idle in front, allowing the fast-finishing River Tiber to launch a devastating challenge up the stands' side rail.
For a few agonising strides, it seemed certain the favourite would be caught. But displaying the coolness and strength that has made him a champion, Buick went to work. A couple of sharp reminders and a vigorous drive prompted Ombudsman to find a crucial second wind, digging deep to fend off his rival by a neck on the line.
The result was a testament to the partnership between horse and jockey, with Buick's experience proving the decisive factor. 'He's a typical Appleby horse – he's done nothing but improve,' the victorious jockey remarked afterwards. 'He was just having a little look around in front today, but he's got a great attitude and found more when he needed to.'
This victory not only adds another prestigious trophy to Godolphin's overflowing cabinet but also stamps Ombudsman as a thrilling prospect for top-level sprints next season. For Buick, it was another day at the office, proving once again why he is considered one of the finest pilots in the world when the pressure is at its most intense.
