Australian cyclist Brodie Chapman has said she was nearly hit by a car during the Tour of Britain Women, raising concerns about safety on the course.
Incident during the race
Chapman, who rides for the FDJ-Suez team, said the incident occurred on the opening stage of the race. She described how a car drove through the peloton, nearly striking her.
“I genuinely thought I was going to die,” Chapman wrote on social media. “A car drove through the bunch and nearly hit me. It’s not good enough.”
Safety concerns raised
The Australian rider criticised the organisation of the event, saying that marshalling and road closures were inadequate. She added that the safety of riders was being compromised.
“We need better protection from traffic,” she said. “This is a professional race and we should not have to worry about cars coming through the group.”
Organisers of the Tour of Britain Women have been contacted for comment.
