Hamilton Accies midfielder Kyle MacDonald says Saturday’s derby clash with Airdrieonians will give them a ‘real gauge’ for how their season will pan out.
Accies aim to extend perfect start
The South Lanarkshire side welcome their North Lanarkshire rivals to New Douglas Park aiming to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season. A narrow 1-0 win over Alloa on Saturday backed up a thumping 5-0 win at Montrose the previous week to take Accies to the League One summit.
But MacDonald believes Airdrie – managed by former Accies gaffer John Rankin – will provide a good barometer for them, with two of the pre-season title contenders going head-to-head.
MacDonald: It will be a real test
Airdrie have drawn both of their matches so far – away to Cove and at home to East Kilbride – but MacDonald told the club media: “The derby is one for everyone to look forward to. It is a big game and it will be a real test.
“I think it will be a real gauge of where we are as a team and how things might pan out for the rest of the season. We want to be as consistent as we can and take [the recent form] into the game.”
Reflecting on the Alloa win
Reflecting on the win over Alloa, which came courtesy of Cammy Blues’ 27th-minute strike, MacDonald added: “It was a tough game, it always is against Alloa, so getting three points in our first home league game is really positive.
“It was a tough second half but we ground it out and saw it over the line. Alloa have good players and it is one of the teams you don’t look forward to playing against so it is a good three points. We are happy to start the league with two wins back-to-back.”
