Alex Albon Nears Historic Williams Milestone
Williams driver Alex Albon is poised to etch his name into Formula One history, with the London-born Thai racer on course to surpass the legendary Nigel Mansell as the driver with the most starts for the iconic British team. This landmark achievement is expected to be secured at the Miami Grand Prix in May, marking Albon's 96th race start for Williams since joining the squad in 2022.
A Surreal Honour for the Grove-Based Team Stalwart
In an exclusive interview with the Press Association, Albon expressed his profound honour at the impending record, describing the prospect as "very surreal". He acknowledged the modern era's packed racing calendar, which features more events annually, but emphasised his deep connection to the Williams project. "I've been a part of this team for a while now, and I hope it shows the outside world that I'm here to see how it goes," Albon stated, reflecting on the team's journey from the back of the grid to securing two podium finishes last season.
World Championship Ambitions Burn Bright
Despite the focus on this personal milestone, Albon's ultimate ambition remains unwavering: to become a Formula One world champion and secure his first race victory. His competitive fire has been fuelled by seeing former karting rivals, like Lando Norris and George Russell, ascend to the sport's pinnacle. "My goals still remain the same," Albon affirmed. "I want to become a Formula One world champion. That's still my ambition, and I'm still working towards that goal."
Navigating Challenges and the Driver Market
The path to this record has not been without obstacles. Williams faced a difficult pre-season, missing testing in Barcelona due to car readiness issues, putting them at a disadvantage as teams adapt to new regulations. Albon attributed these struggles to the team's ambitious push for improvement and reiterated his faith in the project under team principal James Vowles.
As Albon approaches his 30th birthday in March, he acknowledges that his next contract could be his last major opportunity in Formula One. He remains acutely aware of the volatile driver market, noting, "It's a huge driver market this year, and there's a lot of moving parts. The pecking orders have been completely reset, and there's opportunity everywhere."
Williams, founded by Sir Frank Williams, is the third most successful constructor in Formula One history, with nine constructors' titles since 1980. Its roster of former drivers includes iconic names such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Damon Hill, making Albon's impending record a significant chapter in the team's storied legacy.
