A Formula 4 race at Italy's Imola circuit was abandoned after just 17 seconds on Saturday, following a massive pile-up involving 15 cars. The incident occurred at the start of the second race of the day when one car failed to move after the lights went out.
Video footage shows chaos unfolding as drivers attempted to avoid the stationary car, with one swerving into another rival. A huge crash then erupted at the back of the 39-car grid, scattering debris across the start line. Despite frantic yellow flags, many drivers could not see them, leading to the red flag being waved just 17 seconds into the race.
All drivers involved in the crash were reportedly unharmed. Officials initially suspended the race but later decided to abandon it entirely due to a noise curfew at the track. It is not yet known when the race will be rescheduled.
Some motorsport fans questioned the size of the grid, with one writing on Twitter: 'You think 39 cars is a bit too much??!' Another commented: 'It's stupid that they have so many cars on the grid.' A third fan remarked: 'What a monumental accident. One of the biggest single seater pile ups ever. Thank heavens everyone emerged unscathed.'
