Man Utd injury scare: Shaw and Mainoo miss training ahead of Atletico clash
Shaw and Mainoo miss Man Utd training before Atletico match

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were absent from Manchester United training on Monday ahead of Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid. A decision on whether the pair will travel to the Spanish capital is expected later in the day, in what represents a pivotal fixture for United and head coach Michael Carrick.

Other absentees in Monday's session

Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui were also absent from Monday's session. Sesko and Dorgu sat out as they continue to recover from their respective injuries.

Sesko is dealing with a shin complaint, and Carrick, speaking last week, admitted uncertainty over the length of his absence. The striker missed the final three matches of last season and the entirety of pre-season due to a shin injury, though Carrick offered an update on his current setback.

He said: "It's a similar area, but it's not the exact same thing again. And we're still working through it a little bit to see how long the issue will be. We're hoping it will be soon, obviously, but at this moment it's still not quite clear."

Dorgu and Mazraoui sidelined

Dorgu withdrew from international duty with Denmark after sustaining a suspected hamstring injury against Wales, and is anticipated to remain sidelined for several weeks. Mazraoui pulled out of Morocco's international fixtures last month following a knock sustained against Lesotho.

Carrick had hinted at a late call on his availability against Tottenham, but the full-back failed to make the squad and now appears set to miss the Atletico clash as well.

De Ligt continues rehabilitation

Matthijs de Ligt participated in training sessions as he progresses through his injury rehabilitation, though his inclusion in today's travelling party remains uncertain. The Dutch defender was present with the squad at Old Trafford for last weekend's Tottenham fixture but did not feature amongst the substitutes, mirroring the situation against Fulham.

United are taking a cautious approach with De Ligt as he nears full fitness following back surgery. Atletico sit second in La Liga and arrive at this fixture on the back of four consecutive victories, including a triumph over city rivals Real Madrid.
