Conor McGregor's UFC comeback on Saturday lasted only 69 seconds before a devastating knee injury halted the fight, casting serious doubt on his future in mixed martial arts. The Irish superstar, 37, faced Max Holloway at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, marking his first octagon appearance since breaking his ankle against Dustin Poirier five years ago.
Injury Details and Immediate Aftermath
McGregor landed awkwardly on his right knee while attempting a left roundhouse kick against Holloway. He immediately fell to the canvas, impaired, and referee Mike Beltran stopped the bout in the first round. UFC chief executive Dana White told reporters that McGregor likely suffered a "blown ACL"—an anterior cruciate ligament injury that typically requires six to 12 months to heal. If McGregor needs the full recovery period, he would be 39 years old by the time he could return to the sport.
White stated: "I mean, I was expecting at least a one-round war. Who knew what Conor was capable of as far as cardio, whatever else, after a five-year layoff, and there you go. We're assuming a blown ACL. I'm no doctor, but that's what I figured when I saw it, and doctors think the same thing too."
Reactions from Fighters and Fans
Former UFC fighter Kevin Lee described the circumstances as "embarrassing" on X, writing: "Bro wtf just happened. That's the most embarrassing thing in the world to happen." He added: "I'm laughing but I've done that type of thing myself. After returning from double ACL surgery I blew my knee out jumping into the octagon before the fight started, it's embarrassing, but I get it."
Some supporters speculated that McGregor may have injured his knee before the fight, after video showed him appearing to avoid putting weight on his right foot after removing his shoe. However, McGregor rejected those claims in a social media post, saying: "My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."
McGregor's Contract and Future Options
McGregor has just one fight remaining on his UFC contract, which he suggested was pencilled in for April 2027. However, this latest leg injury—following the broken ankle in 2021—has raised questions about whether fans have seen the last of the fighter who transformed the sport. Stepping away from MMA altogether is a credible possibility given his age and the fortune he has amassed. Alternatively, a switch to bare-knuckle boxing remains on the cards; McGregor part-owns BKFC and has repeatedly expressed eagerness to compete in that promotion.
The 37-year-old has now gone over six years without a win, and the fight against Holloway was stopped just 69 seconds in. White had expected at least a one-round war, but the injury cut the bout short. As McGregor approaches his 38th birthday on Tuesday, the road to recovery—and a potential return—remains uncertain.
