World Cup round-up: ITV studio 'terrified', Germany row, referee storm

The overnight World Cup action on Thursday and Friday saw Group D, E, and F conclude their group stage campaigns, with several shocks and controversies. Ecuador stunned Germany 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stages, while Scotland's hopes of advancing were dealt a major blow after a 3-0 loss to Brazil.

Scotland's qualification hopes hang by a thread

Scotland, playing in their first World Cup since 1998, were left in third place in their group with three points and a heavy negative goal difference after being battered by Brazil. With the expanded tournament of 48 teams, eight of the best 12 third-place finishers qualify for the knockout stages. However, overnight results have severely dented Steve Clarke's side's chances. Ecuador, who started the night below Scotland in the third-place table, moved to four points and secured qualification by beating Germany 2-1. In Group E, Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0 to finish second, while in Group F, Netherlands topped the group by defeating Tunisia, and Sweden drew 1-1 with Japan to progress in third. Paraguay also boosted their hopes with a 0-0 draw against Australia in Group D, while USA lost 1-0 to Turkey but still advanced.

ITV studio 'terrified' by fireworks

During ITV's half-time analysis of the USA-Turkey match, presenter Laura Woods, alongside Juan Mata, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and Ange Postecoglou, were startled by a sudden firework display near their studio. Woods remarked: "Our half-time here has been disrupted by an incredible display of fireworks, we're not really sure why yet." The fireworks continued, and a laughing Woods added: "Well this is quite something, it's really spectacular behind us. It caught us all off guard, by the way, absolutely terrifying when it kicked off with all these fireworks."

Germany row: Nagelsmann refutes Undav's claim

After Germany's 2-1 loss to Ecuador, striker Deniz Undav said: "I had the feeling that they wanted it more than we did." Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala echoed similar sentiments. However, manager Julian Nagelsmann dismissed the claim, retorting: "Ecuador wanted it more than we did? That's nonsense."

Referee storm: Tori Penso under fire

Ecuador's win over Germany was marred by controversy, as the Ecuadorian camp believed there was a foul in the buildup to Leroy Sane's opening goal after just two minutes. Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri of SportItalia and former CNN contributor posted on X: "Unbelievable how Germany goal could be allowed. Woman American referee Toni Penso is at it again. So far World Cup refereeing have been absolutely on point, except 3 decisive mistakes.. 2 out of these 3 were mistakes from woman American referee Toni Penso. Enough with her." The post was quickly deemed inappropriate.

Schweinsteiger accused of racist comments

Ivory Coast manager Emerse Fae accused former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger of making racially insensitive remarks after Schweinsteiger described his team's style as "a bit African football" and "not so conditioned by tactics." Fae said: "Schweinsteiger was a very good player; I have always loved him as a midfielder and the way he understood football. When I heard his comments, I was disappointed in the man. It is odd he would speak that way. We could call it racist, if we were calling a spade a spade."
