Why Wharton Missed England World Cup Squad Amid Mainoo Rice Doubts

Wharton's Surprising Omission

One of the most surprising omissions from Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad was that of Adam Wharton. The 22-year-old enjoyed an exceptional campaign with Crystal Palace, culminating in a player-of-the-match display to win the Europa Conference League final. Despite England's midfield sometimes lacking his profile—a deep playmaker capable of carving open low defensive blocks—Tuchel prioritised tournament experience. Wharton accepted the decision with maturity, admitting selection was "never a guarantee" and that he wouldn't dwell on the disappointment.

Mainoo Overlooked Despite Strong Form

Kobbie Mainoo, who impressed under Michael Carrick at Manchester United in the second half of the season, has not played a single minute for England at this World Cup. Tuchel has preferred other options off the bench, even when Declan Rice had to be replaced at half-time against Norway, with right-back Reece James having a stint in midfield. It's hard to see Mainoo getting any game time unless England are involved in Saturday's third-place match.

Rice's Fitness Concerns

Rice has struggled with a combination of minor injuries and illness during the tournament. The 27-year-old has dealt with back and hamstring issues. Recently, a severe sickness bug left him bedridden prior to the quarter-final against Norway. He still started the game but didn't look like himself and was substituted at half-time. Tuchel says Rice has recovered and is set to start against Argentina. He has shaken off the bug and trained fully, giving England a vital boost. Asked if Rice is completely back to normal now, Tuchel said with a smile: "He’s ready to start and [he is] as good recovered as possible."
