Frances Tiafoe won the Halle Open title on Sunday, beating fellow American Taylor Fritz 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in an all-American final. The victory marks Tiafoe's second ATP Tour title and his first on grass, coming just a week before Wimbledon.
Dominant performance
Tiafoe, ranked 27th in the world, broke Fritz's serve twice in the first set to take it 6-1 in just 28 minutes. The second set was more competitive, with both players holding serve until the tiebreak, where Tiafoe prevailed 7-4.
According to ATP statistics, Tiafoe won 82% of his first-serve points and saved both break points he faced. Fritz, ranked 13th, struggled with his first-serve percentage, landing only 56% compared to Tiafoe's 70%.
Historic final
The Halle final was the first all-American ATP final on grass since 1999, when Pete Sampras defeated Andre Agassi at Wimbledon. Tiafoe's win also ended a 23-year drought for American men at Halle, since Sampras won the title in 2003.
"It means a lot," Tiafoe said after the match. "I've worked hard on grass and to get a title here is incredible. Taylor played great, but I was able to stay focused and execute my game plan."
Impact on rankings
The victory lifts Tiafoe to a projected career-high ranking of 19th, while Fritz remains at 13th. Tiafoe now heads to Wimbledon with momentum, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2022. Fritz, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2023, will also look to improve on his best Grand Slam result.
The Halle Open, part of the ATP 500 series, is considered a key warm-up event for Wimbledon, which begins on July 3.
