Thomas Partey was booed by England fans as his name was read out before the World Cup clash with Ghana on Tuesday evening in Boston. The former Arsenal midfielder, who is facing trial in the UK next year on charges of rape and sexual assault, was met with jeers from the crowd at the stadium.
England players shake hands with Partey
Despite the hostile reception from fans, England's players shook hands with Partey before the match, as is customary. The 33-year-old, now playing for Villarreal, was denied entry to Canada for Ghana's Group L opener against Panama due to issues with his visa application, which allegedly failed to disclose his arrest and charges.
Declan Rice praises Partey's ability
Ahead of the contest, England midfielder Declan Rice spoke highly of Partey's footballing skills during a pre-match press conference. Rice said: "As you mentioned Thomas, I've played with him at Arsenal, he's a really good player. I've also played against many of the Ghana team and from the clips we've studied, I know what they're going to bring: strength, pace and the counter-attack."
Partey's visa ordeal and comments
Partey described the rejection of his Canadian visa as "part of football," adding: "Well I think it's part of football, things happen in football that you cannot control. For me now, I feel ready to play. I'm okay, I'm feeling good. We've been training well, and everybody is ready. We are here to try our best and compete with the rest of the teams and I think preparation is key."
Partey's future at Villarreal uncertain
Partey's contract with Villarreal is due to expire this summer and is not expected to be renewed. He made 32 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga side last season, scoring zero goals following his departure from Arsenal last summer.
