World number one Scottie Scheffler produced a sensational second-round 64 to take the outright lead at The Open on 10 under par. The American’s flawless display, featuring eight birdies and just one bogey, left him two shots clear of England’s Matt Fitzpatrick at Royal Portrush.
Scheffler, who won the Masters in 2022, showed his class in challenging conditions, with gusting winds and occasional squalls testing the field. His strokes gained statistics for the week reflect a mixed but effective performance: 93rd off the tee, first on approach, 100th around the greens, and second in putting.
Fitzpatrick, who sits second on nine under, acknowledged the challenge ahead. “There’s still a hell of a long way to go,” he said. “The aim is to stay in it as long as possible and hopefully pull away at the death. There’s nothing better than being in contention.”
Northern Irish hopes rest with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, both on three under. Lowry received a two-shot penalty after his round for his club touching and moving his ball. The R&A will investigate the incident. McIlroy, the 2019 champion at Portrush, will look to inspire the crowds on Saturday.
Other notable names include Tyrrell Hatton and Robert MacIntyre on five under, while Jon Rahm struggled to level par after a bogey at the last. Defending champion Cameron Smith missed the cut, completing a grand slam of missed cuts in majors this year. Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa also failed to make the weekend.
Scheffler’s record with a solo halfway lead is three wins from six attempts, including his first Masters triumph. Sky Sports’ Wayne Riley predicted the American could reach 20 under if winds remain light. The third round begins Saturday afternoon, with Scheffler aiming to extend his advantage.
