Wayne Rooney has voiced his disapproval of England's exuberant dressing room celebrations following their dramatic 3-2 World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico, stating the festivities came "too soon." The Three Lions squad was filmed jumping and dancing in the bowels of the Azteca Stadium after a thrilling comeback win, with head coach Thomas Tuchel actively participating in the revelry.
Rooney's Old-School Concerns
Speaking on BBC's coverage, Rooney, a former England captain, shared his reservations, disagreeing with fellow pundit Cesar Azpilicueta. "I'm a bit more old school. After you win anything… I know you've got to enjoy it, but I think it's a bit too soon," Rooney said. Azpilicueta had earlier defended the celebrations, stating: "As a player, when you have had these kinds of games against a host, this atmosphere, you have to enjoy it. Life is about balance, football is about balance, you have to enjoy it. Now they will recover and be ready for another game."
Injury Concerns Amidst the Joy
The jubilation was briefly interrupted when John Stones appeared to injure his shoulder, but it turned out to be a prank as he quickly began fist-bumping the air while Declan Rice laughed. However, the celebrations turned serious when Jordan Henderson suffered a severe arm injury after falling over advertising hoardings. Henderson has since been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. Additionally, Reece James, Djed Spence, and Jarell Quansah could miss the quarter-final against Norway. Quansah is suspended after a red card against Mexico, though the FA may appeal. James and Spence are injury doubts, with Spence reporting discomfort and James missing the last three games with a hamstring issue.
Post-Match Sing-Along
England's immediate post-match celebrations included the entire squad gathering with supporters to sing 'Wonderwall' by Oasis. Harry Kane was among those singing, and during his BBC interview, the England captain's voice was hoarse, leaving Rooney in stitches.
